About the Passport Office
Formerly known as the Identity and Passport Service, this branch of the Home Office rebranded as Her Majesty’s Passport Office in 2013. The renaming was implemented to recognise that this is the only official issuer of passports and that these are issued under the Royal Prerogative, separate from any later Government plan for identity cards. The issue of a standard adult (16 years and over) 32-page passport costs £72.50, but a fee of £85.50 will secure a 48-page jumbo passport for frequent travellers. A child passport requires a fee of £46 pounds, but there is no fee for those born before 2 September 1929.
Contacting the Passport Office
Upon contacting the Passport Office, you will have a number of options to take. Customers usually contact the team to talk about a current Passport application. There are many different ways to apply for a passport, but we advise that you leave at least six weeks for the paperwork to get processed correctly. Normally a passport application will take about three weeks to process but you should allow at longer as you may be required to attend a face to face interview at your nearest regional office. HM Passport Office also offers a premium service from its regional offices for those who wish to renew an adult passport within four hours. The fee for this shortened process is £128 to renew a standard 32-page passport or £137 for a jumbo passport.
Renewing your passport can be done in two ways and can be renewed or applied for at any time. The service costs £72.50 by post, or you could use the most commonplace provider of the service, the Post Office Check and Send service, which costs £81.25. Despite this being a more costly service, it does make the process even easier as the highly trained Post Office customer service staff will check all the details are correct before applying. Selecting this option should prevent you having to deal with a failed application because a few details on your application were incorrect. Along with the relevant forms for your application you will also need two passport photographs taken to Government standards. If you do not include these in your application or they are not suitable, your application may be rejected.
I’ve heard the reports about the delays in the press. Can I contact the Passport Office to see the status of my application?
Prime Minister David Cameron has spoken about the recent delays in passport applications in the UK. He has noted that over 30,000 applications have suffered delays in recent times. If you are concerned that your application may get caught in this queue, it is understandable that you may be somewhat distressed. In order to ease your fears and ensure that your holiday goes off without a hitch, it is essential that you contact the customer service team within the passport office. The team will be able to help track your application.
I need my passport urgently.
If you have an impending need for your passport in a short period of time, it is recommended that you contact the Passport Office customer service team to advise you on your next step. You should expect though that due to increased seasonal demands, applications may take much longer between April and September, so it is best that you apply as well in advance as possible. It is advisable that you do not book any holidays or travel until you have your passport in hand. If you have submitted a postal application for your passport, it is advised that you select the recorded or special delivery option. Choosing these will ensure that you have to sign for your passport upon delivery. If your passport gets marked as undelivered, it will be returned to the main passport office. You can track the progress of your application three weeks after applying for the passport, and you can contact the customer service team on 0843 515 8144 for more details.
