The government Social Fund is in place to assist those on low incomes and without savings to manage to pay for one-off and emergency expenses. Run and managed in its entirety by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), the Social Fund was established to help those in need. However, there are other forms of emergency funding available. Alternatives include the Budgeting Loan .However, the Social Fund does remain popular with many customers as they feel the need to apply for help with recent unexpected expenses.

What can I apply to the Social Fund for?

The Social Fund is there to assist those who are on low incomes with a one-off expense that may have come out of the blue. Whereas Budgeting Loans and Crisis Loans are the more commonly known methods of payment from the Social Fund there are others available. Alternative choices include Sure Start Maternity Grants for new parents, Funeral Payments, Cold Weather Payments and Winter Fuel Payments. Not everything is under the Social Fund category, and it’s worth investigating if other methods are better for you. It is advisable that you only apply for social funding loans if you are on benefits or low income.

How are decisions made?

All decisions are taken by the central staff at the job centre after you have filled in the appropriate forms. Much like applying for Budgeting Loans, decisions are expected to take approximately 28 days. For more information, you can call the customer service team on the Social Fund Contact Number – 0843 506 9377.

Sure Star Maternity Grants

The issue of these grants is on a discretionary basis to those who are receiving certain benefits such as Income Support or Tax Credits. Such grants can be a one-off payment of £500 – yet could rise to more if there is more than one baby. In addition, it is a grant does not have to be paid back.

Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments

These payments are for people of any age who may be struggling with their fuel payments at a time of the year especially when houses need to be warmer. These payments are not to be confused with the Cold Weather Payment, which is for those of pension age. Both payments are in place to assist those who cannot afford the expensive payments at this time of year. If you would like to apply or to find out more, please call the Social Fund Contact Number on 0843 506 9377.

Funeral Payments

An unexpected death can be extremely difficult to handle, and the added financial burden is something that you will not want to think about, yet sadly is essential. For those who are struggling with these costs, there is help available from the Social Fund and this payment of up to £700 can be applied for by calling the number on this page.

I’ve seen a site posing as the Social Fund, but it is not the official Government one. Who should I contact?

There are third party companies in existence who have likened themselves to the Social Fund and some have gone so far to use the name and also government stylings in order to confuse customers. Be aware though that these are not official, and the only ones you should contact are through the number on this page or in person at your local Job Centre.
